who likes to take over my site?

As you already may have noticed, I haven't updated my site since March
this year. Due to the problems with my arms and my shoulders, I wasn't
able to add new links and remove broken ones. Also because I have a new
job, I want to focus on that job, and make it a success.

So, I'm thinking of stopping my site, but when somebody likes to
continue that site, I'll be very happy. I have only two conditions: the
site has to be maintained in the same way I did since 1999, and my name
has to be on the index page as the founder of this site.

Somebody interested?

With kind regards,

Hello Henk,

A wise decision for you but very sad news here. Your "Links to Freeware" site at
http://home.hccnet.nl/hmdejong/ is a great asset to the Freeware community.

I hope someone is willing to carry on. If hosting costs are a consideration IMO hosting "Links to
Freeware" would be an appropriate use of space on alt.comp.freeware's PWH web site. (As I'm sure you
remember, the site currently provides storage space/bandwidth for SOS downloads.) If one volunteer
doesn't appear several people might be willing to share the work load. Please - let's explore *all*
possibilities before you make a decision to close the site.

Hi Henk!

You must not update your Homepage every two days....

Let it as it is.... update it as you have time.

I hope you will reconsider.

We all hope Henk will reconsider...

But I agree with Henk (who last updated in March), if you can't keep
your site reasonably updated it loses it's function and usefulness.

My main site has not been updated in eleven months and it hurts every
time I think about that fact. And I have been thinking Henks thoughts
many times.

Many of us have full time works and can not bee in front of the computer
in all our spare time. And personally I have the excact same trouble as
Henk: Neck, shoulder and back (getting regulary massage/treatments).

But I still hope to get around and update some day... :-)

regards from vegard

Could you post some brief info about server space needed, bandwidth usage ?

P.

Hi,

I cannot tell you anything about needed webspace and/or usage of
bandwith. The whole site is about 3.5 Mb, and is visited about a 100 to
130 times a day. The site is on a personal free account of my
computerclub, but can also be reached through two redirect services.
The email is on another free ISP.

When somebody wants to continue my site, I'll provide him or her with
the needed account-information. The only thing I have paid for is a
www-adress for my site in the Netherlands. This adress will be
discontinued.

Before I give somebody the care of my site, I first want to know from
that person what his or her intentions are with the site.

With kind regards,

I am considering taking over this for you (if I can find the time myself)
I can/will host it at FORT Freeware if this is okay with you.

URL will look something like this :-)
http://links.quantum.2ya.com

My intentions... well I have none... Just to help another freeware site as
I have had help from other freeware sites and webmasters;

Steve Burn from Ur.I.T Mate Group
Scott from FreewareArena

To name a few.
Its sad to see so many great freeware sites close :-(
I will admit I won't be able to update it as offen as you would probably
like as I also have a full time job and also many other projects on the
run.... but it will be maintained as best as I can.

Hey I really like your site and enjoyed the signatures page. I'm waiting
for the computer funny photos page to finish opening right now (poor
connection again this morning) but it's looking quite, umm, jaw dropping.

Thankyou.

Hi,

Thanks for your offer. I think you mentioned the biggest problem for
maintaining a site like "Links to Freeware": time. I hope you don't
underestimate the effort that has to be done to keep this site alive.
It's not only adding the new links (and taking a look at those sites
for describing them) but more time is lost with updating links and
removing broken links. To give you an idea about what I did to keep the
site alive and updated it once a week: every Wednesday I checked the
link summaries of Mark Carter for new sites, and added them to the
database. Also the sites that I received from the site submission
through the site were added. On Wednesday I also started to visit those
sites, make a short description and gave it a ranking. Most of the time
I continued doing this on Thursday. On Friday I started with the
removals of the 'new' banners on the pages, make a new message for ACF,
and started adding the sites to the pages. Also on Friday I fired up
Xenu to start checking the links on my site. I also tried the links
again that I had removed from the list in the week before. When they
are alive again I added those sites to the list again, and mentioned
this in the message for ACF. On Saterday I fired Xenu up again, and
compared the results with the results of the run on Friday. After that
I try to find out if there is a new adress of the site that gave a 404.
This takes a lot of time. On Sunday I remove the broken links, make a
note of this in the message for ACF, make a new database, and send the
new pages to the ISP and the message to ACF. And that it was for one
week......... :-) :-)

I think that it is essential to have a lot of time available to keep
this site alive. I have already noticed that not updating the site for
some months, gives a whole lot of work, and also gave me the feeling
that I had to work for more than a week to get it up to date.

With kind regards,
