I recently bought a new wireless mouse for my computer. The packaging and
the manual both state explicitly that the mouse is compatible with Windows
XP. However I can't program the mouse's extra buttons. I called the
mouse's tech support number. The tech support rep told me that the mouse is
NOT compatible with Windows XP. I don't think that's valid, so I want to
check a peripherals newsgroup for a second opinion.

Can anyone direct me to the appropriate newsgroup.

Then return the mouse as incompatible to the store where you bought it
and inform them that the company's technical support that makes the
mouse claims the specifications on the packaging is erroneous or
misleading, or call their customer support number (not tech support) and
ask how you get them to issue a refund for their fraudulently spec'ed
product.

What is more likely is that the mouse *software* you used won't work
under Windows XP. So just use the mouse and get whatever functions the
standard PS/2 mouse driver included in Windows will give you. Then
check the mouse maker's web site to see if they have downloads of their
mouse software that ARE listed as Windows XP compatible.

Of course, mentioning WHAT mouse you actually got might help in getting
better focused responses to your question. There are way too many
brands of mice for us to guess at which one you happen to be using.
