No.

or is microsoft going to publish such a thing?

Nobody can tell you for sure what Microsoft might or might not do, but I can
tell you that I very strongly doubt it. In fact, I would be shocked if they
did this.

Since when is Microsoft giving away Windows? But there may be
a low-priced edition of the upcoming Vista. Rumor has it that
at least 5 or 6 different levels of installation (and prices)
are being considered.

Yeah, I'm going down to the Chevy dealer now and demand they give me a
Special Edition Silverado, extended cab/long bed Z71 with an ethanol capable
engine <grin>!

There will be a very low-level Edition of Vista once it is released to
manufacturing. It will cost much the same as XP Home Edition. It
will NOT include the advanced graphics features of Vista.

It will basically be much like XP Home Edition in its feature-set and
appearance.

You might as well keep XP on your system, and wait for the next
Service Pack. It will be free, as all other Windows service packs
have been.

But a FREE version of Windows?

There may be one as soon as the Moon turns into green cheese, but not
before.

Windows and Office are Microsoft's cash cows. I doubt seriously
whether they are going to give either away any time soon.

So don't even consider it. And above all DO NOT DOWNLOAD any product
purporting to be any such "free edition of Windows", since it is SURE
to be a PIRATED version, and NOT an official Microsoft product.

Ask your parents. Christmas is coming.

Pigs might fly. The nearest thing to free are the Original Equipment
Manufacturer's (OEM) versions of Windows which come pre-installed by the
manufacturer/vendor, the price of which is bundled with a new computer. That
is the cheapest way of obtaining Windows, after that it is student/teacher
versions.

Yes and No.

There is a sort of "Personal Edition" of WinXP, very limited and
*sold* OEM very cheap in Third World Countries only.
