Is there a way to change the color of the text select?

I don't mean the highlighting function. I mean the default black color
you get when you click-hold the mouse and select text for formatting. I
would like to change it to a customized color.

TIA,

No, not the way you mean it -- that is, you can't change only that one
color.

There are two things you can do. One is to check the item in Tools > Options
General for "Blue background, white text". Then the selection background
becomes yellow. (This was an effort to emulate WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS.)

The other is to go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display, on the
Appearance tab. Select "Window" in the item box, click the color dropdown,
and choose a color other than white. (Note that this affects all program
windows, not just Word.) If it's different enough from white, the selection
background becomes the complementary color. For example, choosing cyan for
the window color will give you a red selection background; choosing a yellow
window gives you a blue selection background.

Besides the fact that this changes all windows indiscriminately, it's hard
to find a window color that changes the selection background but doesn't
hurt your eyes. I prefer a light ivory window color (255 red, 247 green, 223
blue) for general use, but the selection background is still black.
