I like to scan the first page of a file to help determine whether it is the
file I am looking for in my various directories. However I have to manually
edit the properties to check the box Preview picture each time I would like
to change the default, and am suspecting it need to be done using the

Some versions of Word/Office remember the last setting you used in the
File/Open dialog box. Others (older ones) do not. And some versions won't if
you have addins installed that interfere with how Word works, internally.

Sometimes, you can use a macro to force the view. But what the macro contains
is version-specific, and you haven't told us which one you have.

First, thank you for the reply.
The version of Office is 2002, I have the same problem at work or home and
am not running any add-ons.
Is this setting available as a default in Office 2003?
Sincerely, RJ

I believe this question has to do with saving a preview picture with the
document. Although the OP is correct in assuming that this is a change that
needs to be made in the template, it is a very bad idea to do so, as it
dramatically increases the size of *every* document based on the template
and doesn't really add any utility. The Preview view in File Open actually
provides a much more usable preview if you *don't* save a preview picture
with the document.
