Is there a shutdown log?

I am trying to determine why my system will not complete shutdown.

The problem started after I did a system restore to roll-back Western Digital Net Center
installation to eliminate an instability in my system. I then reinstalled Microsoft's validation
application (which also got un installed by the roll back) and Quicken 5.

I have tried safe mode and shutdown still hangs.

The problem appears to be somewhere after USB devices are disconnected as it occurs after my USB
mouse stops working. The screen still has the default background and a pointer for the mouse but
the pointer no longer responses to mouse movements.

I am hesitant to try another rollback.

There is a boot log that enables you to find out where the boot process is failing. Is there an
equivalent shutdown log and if so how do I activate and view it?

Microsoft has a program called uphclean.exe that tries to fix this problem
by closing the open processes. Do a search for it on microsoft.com.

The description of UPHClean.exe on Microsoft.com is:
The User Profile Hive Cleanup service helps to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a
user logs off. System processes and applications occasionally maintain connections to registry keys
in the user profile after a user logs off. In those cases the user session is prevented from
completely ending. This can result in problems when using Roaming User Profiles in a server
environment or when using locked profiles as implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for
Windows XP.

I guess I wasn't clear enough. If I power the machine down and then boot into safe mode and then
select shutdown without logging in the system still hangs. I don't think this is a user profile
problem.

I did try UPHClean.exe on the off chance that the Microsoft description was not complete but it
didn't do anything. The system still hung in shutdown.

Can't help then. Sorry.
