Is there a program takes names & addresses of a spreadsheet?

Is there a program that will gather information, such as name address,
from a spreadsheet for future processing of letters via MS Word?

Not necessarily. I have one using the third tab over
 
Well, my previous experience with mail merge
was that it did matter (at least in xl97 / word97).

Anyway, the precaution is still highlighted in Dave M's mail merge page,
viz.:

"Biggest stumbling block with using Mail Merge and an Excel database: Be
sure to have your Excel spreadsheet as the first worksheet tab in your
workbook. Even using a defined name, it appears you must have the worksheet
as the first worksheet tab in your workbook. "

I'm using xl2002 and word 2002. Seems to work.
