Try one of the online AV scanners. All are freely available, but some
provide detection only, not removal or quarantine. Most require the
use of ActiveX (IE). IIRC, some allow the download of the AV engine,
which can be put on your flash drive/memory stick.

Kaspersky AV: Free Online Virus Scanner - detection only

Trend Micro HouseCall - detection and removal

BitDefender Online Scanner - detection and removal

Dr.Web CureIT! - detection and removal

F-Secure Online Virus Scanner - detection, virus removal only
(http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml)
Freedom Online Scanner - detection only
(http://www.freedom.net/viruscenter/index.html)
CA's eTrust AV Web Scanner - detection and removal
(http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx)
McAfee FreeScan - detection only

Symantec Security Check

So Ron,
Could you enlighten me as to how this helps him scan a machine without
internet access, or have I missed something here.

Stinger -- small and quick

Trend Micro Sysclean -- big and thorough

I need one to stick on a USB drive to run on a machine without internet
access.

The current NON-beta version of AntiVIR can be expanded to it's component
directory and run in this mode. I keep a sopy of it on my USB stick for
scanning client's machines. You can even run internet-based upgrades from
the stick.

I recently posed that question over in alt.comp.anti-virus ("AV-CLS" is
a master program that down loads 5 free anti virus modules for cleaning
computers. David Lipman is the author.):

Yes. That will work !

Just make sure the it is copied to C:\ such that the reultant location
will be; c:\AV-CLS

Just remeber to make sure it has the latest updates for each AV module
prior to copying it
to the thumb drive.

The recipeient would then just have to execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT

{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

(end)

Grab Multi AV from this site. It uses scan engines from McAfee,
Sophos, KAV and Trend. You'll need to update the definitions from an
internet ready computer before going to the no internet one. It's not
lightweight once updated though. About 60 megs with all updates.

On portable freeware they suggested (and this does work) installing
Anti-vir on your machine, copying it to your USB drive and deinstalling
it from your machine. It works, but it may be more than what you need.

Got this from one of the portable freeware sites, not sure which one.

If it _has_ to be on the C: drive then I do not want it.

You can edit the batch files to change the paths, and the kix script
files look like they can be edited as well. I just opened one in
notepad. Search and replace should get you going on any drive you
want.

I use the one on Art's site (KASFX.exe)-

http://home.epix.net/~artnpeg/

I keep a copy on my hard drive, when I need to go have a look at a friends
computer, I update it, then copy the folder to my flash drive.
The other day a friends daughter asked if I could have a look at her
computer, as it was running a bit slow. The result, 63 viruses deleted.
I think Kaspersky has a pretty good name as a virus scanner. ;)

I realise that _I_ can do that. If the author can't be bothered
writing an installer that allows me to select where I want the program
to go why should I bother to use his program.

ClamWin allows this. You need to install it on a "host" PC first, but the
manual has instructions on creating a CD/USB key version. Just tested it
myself and it works fine.

No, I misread the OP. I read it as "without installation". The on-line
solution would work only if the AV engine _and_ database could be
downloaded to the USB drive. I don't know if any of them allow that
with the online AV engine.

On the other hand, I know for a fact that KAV (Kaspersky) can be
installed, the cumulative and daily databases updated and a full
system scan performed _without_ internet access. I have done it, and I
would think that it would be possible with other AVs. But I am not
sure that is what the OP is looking for. It would require the
installation of the AV program, and the uninstallation of same can be
the problem.
