Is there a limit to number of files in root directory?

Did a quick search of MSKB for limit of files in root directory, and
came up empty. Does XP have a limit for the number of items that can
be in the root directory of a partition? I typically install all my
programs on E drive if they let me, and I want to make sure I don't
run into problems further down the road. Thanks.

MS-DOS and its FAT16 file system was limited to a total of 512
entries (iow, both files & directories counted) in the root directory
of the partition. WinXP's NTFS file system has no such limitation.

Things has changed greatly since the days of MS-DOS and the FAT16
file system.

And FAT32 has a limit of 65,534 entries in any directory. Long file
names use multiple directory entries.

Good point, I overlooked that fact.
