is there a keyboard shortcut for adding numbering to a list

I work with visually impaired users who don't use a mouse. I know I can add
numbers to an existing list by going through the menu system but feel there
must be a keyboard short cut as there is for adding bullets. Can anyone
help? Word xp

You can use CTRL+SHIFT+L to add bullets to selected paragraphs. Note
that this keyboard shortcut actually applies the List Bullet paragraph
style, which you can modify to suit your needs.

Obviously, I didn't read your message very carefully. :-(

Make sure numbering is stored with a paragraph style, and then add a
keyboard shortcut to that style.

Once the style is applied, you can click Tools>Customize, and then
click the Keyboard button. Under "Categories", pick "Styles", click to
select the style name, and then type a keyboard shortcut into the
"Press new shortcut key" box. Choose the appropriate template for
"Save changes in" and then click Assign to add the chosen shortcut.
