Hi Guys,

My son dabbles in cars and he was asking if there is a free (obviously)
program that can record details such as: parts - prices - etc, something
that looks like:-

Date - Description - Part/s - Price -

I have tried doing a database but with my very limited knowledge I am
getting nowhere fast.

If there is such a program, I would be really grateful if please point me in
the right direction.

Many thanks guys.

Dave.

I don't know if you need a searchable data base. But from what you said, you
could install Open Office and simply create a spreadsheet. I do it all the
time for stuff like this.

Hey Dave;

Let me apologize upfront for not answering with exactly what you're
looking for <sheepish grin>. I'd suggest one of two solutions. The
first involves setting up something simpler than a database (w/a view
towards eventually doing so). The second is taking y.a. stab at a database.

I Spreadsheet!

Spreadsheets have very gentle learning curves. You'll get a lot of db
advantages (it's a flat-file db afterall) and you'll be able to export
to a "real" (relational) db later on by exporting as .csv data, eg.
Perhaps you have MS Excel already loaded or you can download
OpenOffice.org's Office suite package which includes something very
similar. Which leads me to...

II OpenOffice.org's "Base"

OpenOffice.org will be releasing their v2.0 sometime this summer.
Included in this is a db they're calling base. I've used this for
simple projects and it's quite nice. Currently, OOo v2.0 is available
in pre-release but I've been finding it stable enough. (openoffice.org)

There is a tutorial for their database that I found *very* clear &
practically bullet-proof (this is why I dared suggest it). The possible
drawback here is that you don't want an Office suite of applications,
just a db.

dbEdit is a very easy-to-use database program.

dbEdit will dial your phone, allow you to edit databases in an easy way,
sort, search, create subset tables, and many other things.

dbEdit is an MDI (Multi-Document Interface) application - this means
many databases can be open at a time. Records can easily be moved
between databases or between applications, you can conduct multiple
database searches, and custom macros can be written that allow dbEdit to
launch programs and provide them with data.

Oh, I almost forgot the other good news. dbEdit is CareWare - that means
no money, now or ever. You just have to care.

I have tried doing a database but with my very limited knowledge I am
getting nowhere fast.

A very simple freeware spreadsheet program that could quickly and
easily do the above would be:

List²
http://www.bitride.com/freeware.php

<quotes from the page>
Spreadsheet-like program for creating lists and tables. Functionality
includes easy row insertion and deletion, direct cell entry,
customizable column headers, find and replace, clipboard
cut/copy/paste, export to HTML, and printing.
<end quotes from the page>

I use a commercial spreadsheet, but I got this one for my son to use
on his computer, and it does the job with no discernable learning
curve. :)

Another one that looks very interesting (but once again, I haven't
tried) is:

Ezee Records
http://www.heightssoftware.com/

<quotes from the page>
Ezee Records is a free Windows program for storing information in
simple tables customized to your needs. Its potential uses include
telephone and contact lists, DVD or music catalogs, appointments and
To Do lists.

Ezee Records is unique in that it is designed specifically for the
easy managing of single-table sets of records. While you can use other
programs, such as databases or spreadsheets to do this, they are
invariably more difficult and slower to use. And, unlike Ezee Records,
they aren't free!
If there is such a program, I would be really grateful if please point me in
the right direction.

Here are a few automobile programs I downloaded long ago, but never
tried (I'm a collector of freeware - it's probably a clinical disorder
<g>.). Two of them seem to be no longer available. I've marked those
below, and can upload them somewhere if you'd like.

AutoMobile Recorder
http://www.afterzed.com/freeware/organizfreeware3.html

<quotes from the page>
AutoMobile Recorder (AMR) is a great vehicle record keeping program.
It allows you to save, print, and later open your records. You can
make changes and then always keep them handy! This program I made
especially for my grandpa, LeRoy Postma. Since he is a mechanic and
would like to know what has all been done on his vehicles. Also if you
sell your vehicle, you may distribute this program and your records of
the car. So then the buyers know the history of the car! Great Idea
huh? Since most people can't remember what was ever done.

CarCare

*Note from Little Girl: The page is no longer available. I have a copy
of this and can post it if you want to check it out. My zip file of it
(including comments from alt.comp.freeware a while back) is 19kb.

<quotes from CarCare.txt>
A database program that helps you keep track of the maintenance work
you do on your cars.
<end quotes from CarCare.txt>

Free-for-3 Vehicle Record System
http://www.kjon.com/

<quotes from the page>
K-Jon was started in 1986 to develop and market comprehensive, yet
inexpensive, vehicle management software for both home and business
use. Our flagship products were DOS versions of our Vehicle Record
System™ and the Fleet Vehicle Record System™.

Our current products run under all versions of Windows. Our Home
Edition will track maintenance and expenses for seven vehicles and our
Business and Fleet Editions will track all of your vehicles.

And if you only want to track three or fewer vehicles, then our
Free-for-3 Edition is custom made for you. The price is right and
other than the number of vehicles it tracks, it is exactly the same
program as our Home and Business Editions.

Vehicle Data

*Note from Little Girl: The page is no longer available. I have a copy

<quotes from the page>
"Vehicle Data" is a program that keeps information about your
vehicle(s). It's very easy to use as the screens show. Please read the
..txt and .hlp files for more information.

You're Welcome!

I've tried all of them, but I only use the first two. The third one I
located after starting to use the others, so instead of changing
programs mid-stream I've stuck with the first two. The hard part will be
figuring what data he wants to put in his database (Database Design).

Well Littlegirl;

Your burden is our gain. It turns out, btw that the Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, (DSM-IV) has an entry that may
be relevant. Happily for us, it looks chronic and untreatable. Below
is the summary, lemme know if you need the url.

best wishes,

up to you, Dave. But why quote ~ 140 top posted quoting lines only for
"Wow, thanks..."? And shorten quotings as far as possible would be fine.
THX for your kind understanding.

Our pleasure (if I may be so bold). But please, drop us a line on what
you & your son end up using (and why). Oh, and if you know of any
groovy freeware...

No need for the URL - I'm a card-carrying member. :)

I have a feeling there isn't a soul in here who doesn't suffer
miserably from this terrible condition. I have a team of scientists
and researchers working on an intra-spinal USB implant that can
reprogram the frontal lobe of any sufferer at the touch of a button.
It's still in beta, and currently only provides relief for 3 to 5
minutes. The final product should be available by the end of the year
and will, of course, be free. :)

Alas, sufferers may not seek treatment. Euphoria is common after a rare app is tracked down and
"bagged" - many will be reluctant to give up these manic highs. . .
