The system file checker is very handy and there are other
programs that have even more features such as File Sentry
but all the ones I've seen have one flaw. The place
where these programs go for the latest file replacements
is in a directory on your hard drive (dllcache for sfc)
where the latest files are stored. The problem is that
it is possible for some of those "latest" files to not be
the most current available. For instance, if the
dllcache gets deleted accidently then it will be rebuilt
with files from the original installation disk and these
files are outdated.
*Wouldn't it be great in the event of a corrupted system
file if there was a program that fetched its most current
replacement from a repository on the web that is
constantly updated with the latest files? Is there any
such program out there?*
