Is the disc in my E:\ full?

My new eMachine is running Office Standard 2007 on Vista Home Basic.

Using a friend's computer with an A:\ drive and a CD drive labeled D:\, I
successfully copied 8 files totaling 636KB from a 3.5" floppy onto a fresh
DC-RW. In my directory window, which numbers and shows only 8 files, I can
view and open these files.

But the icon of my E:\ drive on my "Computer" screen and the "Properties"
view of this drive both show a full disc. Are these true readings? If so,
what else is on this disk? How can I find out? What is causing the "full"
showing?

Thanks, all.

How big is the drive? it may be a recovery partition, and yes, it will show
in Computer as pretty much full.

There are many options with CD and DVD media and in simple terms you can
choose whether to leave a CD "Open" for future use or "Close" it so it
appears full whatever is on it.

This varies a lot depending on the actual drive being used, the software
used to "Burn" the disk and possibly the copied content, so it's not
possible to give you a definite answer without knowing the full details
of everything on the system.

The most likely explanation is that the full disk reading is false and that
the reason is deficiences in the CDFS structure or in Microsoft's ability to
deduce
file system properties of CDFS.

Another poster mentioned other reasons as well.

Uh... if your floppy disk is A: and your CD drive is D:, what, exactly is
your E: drive?

Thanks, dean-dean.
"Drive" to me means either the hard drive or the drawer-like device in the
tower into which you put a CD for reading or burning.

The hard drive on this machine (Local Disc C:\) has a 140 GB capacity of
which 114 GB is free. The Recovery drive D:\ shows 1.46 GB free of 8.50 GB
capacity. The CD-RW holds 700 MB.

Do you have any comments on the other two posts?

Thanks, Charlie.

What are the steps for leaving this CD-RW "Open"? The Properties tab
doesn't help.

Thanks, Jim.

I'm guessing "CDFS" means Compact Disc File System. Right? Where can I get
more details on CDFS?

I think I see. E is the drive for your CD player. You put the disc in and
it shows full. You can right-click on it and choose Explore to find out
what it contains, file-wise.

You may have finalized your disc instead of closing the current session. A
disc that has been finalized is complete, and will show full in Computer;
you can't add any more files to it. If you closed the current session,
however, you can add more files as long as you have room on the disc. Do a
search for burning in Help and Support for further explanation.

Thanks, Lang.

My eMachine has only one functioning "drawer drive." The one below it, a CD
drive, is labeled "Expansion" and doesn't work. There is no A: drive on this
eMachine.

That's why I had to use my friend's machince. He has both an A: drive and a
CD drive. This let me transfer the data on my 3.5 floppy to my new 700 MB CD
in his machine. His only CD drive is labeled D:. My D: is for recovery and
must be a partition of my Local Disk C:. The drive on my machine
corresponding to my friend's D: is labeled E:. And it worked, except for the
"full disc" problem.

I'm guessing I must have somehow finalized my CD on my friend's machine, as
dean-dean suggests. If so, how would I avoid that on a retry?

But if I understand dean-dean correctly, I can't reverse this finalization.

What do you think?

Yes, that is correct. As for the details, I can't find the url right now.
You should search for
this term.
As some other posters have mentioned, when you close the disk against any
more additions, Windows
may mark this condition by showing the free space as zero.

I can't tell you how to close the disk with Vista because I have always used
EasyCD Creator which offers
this option when you eject the media.

Let me go read dean-dean's reply... brb... k... I think dean-dean is a
scholar and a gentleman and I would no more disagree with him than I would
with myself. In other words... sounds 'bout right.

Very helpful links, Engle. Thank you.

At this point I need more information about my friend's machine. That's
where I must have "closed" or "finalized" my disk.

BTW, I find that "closing" a session and "closing" a disc are not the same
thing.
