Is registry saved on installation?

I just reinstalled xp pro sp1 (legal copy) over xp pro (borrowed
copy). It seems ok now, my data is there, my programs are there, but
none of them are listed in the Start/Programs menu. If I click on the
programs themselves within Explorer, nothing happens.

Did, by chance, windows save a copy of the registry I can put back so
my installed programs will work again? Or do I have to reinstall
everything again?

Hello Blacksmitth,
It does not sound like you did an upgrade it sounds like you did a clean
install.
The registry is saved at the end of setup to the \windows\repair folder
check this file for me please:
c:\windows\system32\$winnt$.inf
under the section
[data]
what do these two entries state?
winntupgrade=no
win9xupgrade=no
If they are no it looks like a clean install is done so copying the
registry would not help.

Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

They say "no". Nuts. Yes I did a clean install, but left all me
stuff on the drive and it looked like it saved everything, but I guess
not the registry.

Thanks,
Ed
