Greetings folks; How can I know if my PC will be
upgradable from windows ME to windows XP?

256 megs of ram (512 if you run a lot of stuff).
minimum 700mhz pc or double that really..
3 gigs of harddrive space for xp.

-Here are the MINIMUM requirements from Microsoft-
Processor: 233MHz
RAM: 64MB
HD space: 1.5GB MINIMUM
Screen resolution: 800x600
-RECOMMENDED FROM MICROSOFT-
Processor: 300MHz
RAM: 128MB
HD space: xx.xGB
Screen resolution: xxxXxxx
-WHAT I WOULD RECOMMEND-
Processor: 600MHz (I've used XP with a 400MHz AMD CPU, but it could have
been much faster - the computer would almost die when playing with WMP9, it
ran better with WMP8)
RAM: 192MB
HD space: 4GB
Screen resolution: 1024x768
-WHAT I WOULD RECOMMEND FOR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE-
Processor: 1GHz
RAM: 256MB
HD space: 10GB
Screen resolution: 1024x768
-WHAT I WOULD RECOMMEND FOR MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE-
Processor: 2GHz or faster (This will vary depending on what brand of CPU
you have)
RAM: 1024MB or more
HD space: 40GB or more
Screen resolution: 1024x768

Greetings --

That's a very good question, and you're to be commended for asking
it _before_ starting.

This information can normally be found at the PC's manufacturer's
web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, you
can download and run Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you
have any incompatible hardware components or applications.

You should also, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure
that there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and *hard drives*) that will
still support Win9x.

I'm not sure what you mean by "optimum" vs "maximum." The two
words essentially mean the same thing--"best."

You can put in an XP CD to autorun, and use the 'Check for
Compatibility'.

Broadly, you need more than the 'recommended' 128MB RAM, preferably 256
(or more); a CPU at 400MHz or up, and say a basic 4GB of free hard disk
space.

Also if you have devices like a scanner connected via the parallel port
they are likely not to work: the methods used are not allowed in XP,
and the makers see them as obsolete devices and are not providing
different drivers. If you have CD Burning software, uninstall it first,
also System Utilities like Norton - reinstalling in versions confirmed
as OK for XP afterwards if you find you need them. Also disable,
preferably uninstall AV packages for the duration

The usual method is to go to the store, buy a retail copy of
Windows XP for hundreds of dollars, start the install process, and
cross your fingers.

(If) - install fails -
(then) - curse Microsoft -

You can do an on-line scan at www.pcpitstop.com or download
the MS upgrade test
from MS. See the
