is Outlook a good mail client?

I have never used Outlook and I don't know what version I have (I am
at the office, now). I use W98 SE, IE/Outlook Express 6, Office 97.

I have had all kinds of problems with OE6 and I was advised to use
Outlook since it's more stable and it does more (I don't need more).
Is this correct?

I am thinking of switching to Outlook since I should be able to
retrieve my mail messages, identities, etc.. Anything I should know?

Thanks in advance - Giovanni

Many Viruses target Outlook. My advice is to make sure
all of the service packs and hotfixes are applied.

Also keep current with your anti-virus software. I
started with Outlook Express and switched to Outlook
perhaps 5 years ago, and have upgraded from Windows 98 to
XP Professional. It's not perfect, but overall is quite
good. I use its Calendar and Task features a lot, have
distribution lists, and well over 2000 contacts.

I disliked Outlook 97 and 98 immensely. They didn't get it right until
2000. If you can't do a full upgrade to XP and Office 11, (if I had to
guess, your system won't support it) then I'd just skip that and get a
non-MS email program, like Thunderbird. I don't know if I can even say
that here, but that's my thought.

If you just want a new mail client, bypass Outlook. Outlook is a full
Personal Information Management (PIM) program (email, tasks, contacts,
etc.). You say you don't need more than Outlook express.

Outlook express that is part of Windows XP is stable and works fine. I
don't understand how anyone can comment that one is "more stable" than
the other as other than sharing the name "outlook" they are different
products completely.

I use Outlook 2003. If I didn't use it (since I want the PIM features),
I'd use Mozilla's mail client (www.mozilla.org) which I used for a fews
years before moving to Outlook to get he PIM features. Mozilla is free.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
