I am using Windows XP Pro with SP1. I went into WU and
xpsp2 is there ready for install. I have a computer
friend who said he would install it for me when it was
ready. I called him and he said that when he installed
sp2 on his computer (3.5GH drive) it downloaded and
installed just fine, but when he rebooted all he got was
a black screen and he had to reinstall all his programs.
He said my computer was not big enough for download and
not to do it. I need a second opinion. I have read alot
about xpsp2 and printed it. I have an IBM thinkpad 390x
laptop computer. It has 256 MB of RAM and is 398MHz.
Memory free is 682MB and used 156MB. It has 11.23GB Hard
drive (7.35 GB free and 3.88MB used). If this is not big
enough and WU has the download ready, it won't install
unless I click install. Correct? I really would like to
have xpsp2 but not sure if I want to attempt it now.
Since the download is ready in WU will it just stay there
until I decide I want to install it? I also have all
critical updates, NSW2003 definitions updated, firewall
is with Microsoft. Can anyone give me their opinion? Just
don't want to loose computer because of xpsp2 install
because I wouldn't know what to do then.

I'd suggest you pass on installing SP2 and wait until all
the bugs are out.
I had the same experience on a machine with an 80gb drive.
Your machine is fine and you have enough capacity but I'd
stay away from it for the time being.

lon,

so far, based on your specs, i don't see any reason why winxp sp2 won't fit
in. basically, it tries to replace some of your windows files so the
increase in hard drive usage for windows, if ever, would just be minimal.

as for installation, there are a few options you could choose from:
(a) use automatic update (recommended). this will download the files to
your computer and install it automatically.
(b) download the updates for you but will wait for you to install it
manually.
(c) notify you if any updates.

you can open your control panel, open the system applet, click on the
automatic updates tab and set your options. option (a) is recommended
though, as your windows will only update what needs to be updated and that,
it will download only at the background, stopping or minimizing the download
speed depending on your internet usage, so generally, it doesn't get in your
way of using the internet.

hope this helps.

Thank you for your quick response. I will just wait until
all bugs are out and maybe by then I will have a better
computer to take install. Second opinions do help. May
your day be just great.....

barrie,

it is less likely that microsoft will change and/or update sp2 after the
release. however, they can issue a patch for sp2 if ever they found a
problem with sp2.
