I have been told that the Access .mdb file is an executable, and could
therefore be used to transmit worms etc if sent as an email attachment - is
this true?

The short answer is to the second half of your question is "Yes",
though an Access database can only be "executed" by Access and an
Access database containing malicious VBA code would only be able to
"infect" a system on which Access was already installed, and then only
if you chose to open it. I have not heard of a specific instance of
malicious code being propagated in/as an Access database, but would be
surprised if someone has not tried it.
