Is it worth it?

Is it really worth the trouble of upgrading to XP from 98?
There seems to be just as many problems.
What is your true opinion?

Well if you want to live with the Dinosaurs stick with 98. I have been
using XP Pro since 2001 and have never had a crash. It runs ten times
faster than 98 and most of all I can run any programs out there. Granted
you will have to upgrade things and get more memory but I think it is
well worth the effort. Memory is especially cheap and 512 megs is
recommended. Keep reading this newsgroup for advice on running and
installing XP. :-)

Only you can made that decision - based on how '98 is performing your tasks.

XP is more stable and secure (especially the PRO version, if you need its
features), but may require updated drivers or hardware. See the XP pages at
MicroSoft, for compatibility concerns that should be addressed prior to
installation.

Also, there's the learning curve, which can be fun or frustrating -
depending upon your disposition.^

Hi Walter,

Yes it is. No contest.

XP is considerably better than 98. It is much more stable and there are
multiple improvements. I find it much more intutative than 98.

There are always going to be problems but remember that the posts you see
here are from the minority of the users and most are created by the person
abusing the system.

People download everything they see than cannot understand why windows does
not work right. They also try to tweak the system without knowing what they
are doing and cause cascading faults. Also many posts are duplicate problems
stated a different way.

I have been using xp for 18 months with almost no problems. Definantly less
problems than with 98.

Any new system will have a learning curve. With a little effort xp will be
the best oe you ever used.

Hope this helps
Richard

I fought it for a long time until my old machine died and was forced to bite
the bullet. No regrets. At least you can still get updates for XP and time
is running out for 98.....which is a good enough reason to consider the
move.

Windows 98's days are numbered. It's not
whether you upgrade; it's when.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. 98 is a good OS. I have xp home and am
thinking of going back to 98se.

In my view, Windows XP is the best and most stable version of
Windows ever released. There are *far* fewer problems with it
than with 98.

But that doesn't mean I think everyone should rush out and
upgrade to it. If you were buying a new computer, and asking what
operating system to get for it, I would unhesitatingly say XP.
But upgrading is a different matter; upgrading means extra cost,
extra time for installation, learning curve, etc., and maybe even
problems and frustration until you learn how to use the new
product,

I think you should ask yourself what you hope to gain from
upgrading. Are you having problems that you expect XP to fix? Do
you have or need hardware or software that XP supports, but 98
doesn't? Unless the answer to one or more of those questions is
yes, stick with what you have for the time being. Don't incur the
costs of upgrading unless you've identified clear benefits to
doing so.

Of course, you won't be able to stay with 98 for ever. Sooner or
later, you'll need to upgrade, either to XP or one of its
successors, if for no other reason that you will have hardware or
software that 98 doesn't support. But don't rush it before you
need to.

Yep. I've had XP for six weeks, hasn't crashed once (although a couple
of times, it seemed to be thinking about it). That being said, I
haven't had years to mess up this computer.

People post in these groups because they're having problems. It's the
equivalent of the doctor's office, not a reflection of the health of
the general populace.

That's a good point.

Of course your asking in group that is about Windows XP. Most of these
schmucks didn't upgrade but got XP with a new computer too! If it ain't
broke don't fix it. There are very few things that require XP, so
unless need any of those few things, save your money!

Claims of better reliability, and speed are pipe dreams just like
"Trustworty Computing."

Think of the fable the Emperers New Clothes! That's XP's brand of hype!

Problems with XP are usually related to old software and hardware not being
compatible. If your system is older and has older devices attached of
course you will have problems, especially if you do not verify that XP
drivers exist. Do your home work and upgrade after you know that you will
have no problems with incompatibility. XP is not going to make older system
with problem work or increase the speed. The biggest problems that come
with XP installation usually happen from not planning ahead.
With the price of computer systems, including XP installed it sometime
better to save your money and buy a computer built for XP.

Simply put, Windows XP is the finest OS Microsoft has produced to date. Not
to mention that non-MS software and hardware developers are no longer very
concerned with how their applications run on Win 98. Not only is XP more
stable than 98, it's a lot more fun.
