Is it true that XP can only be installed once and once only?

I have a XP upgrade disk that my dad gave me.... He had it
installed on an e-machine that came with winMe. He took
the XP out and went back to Me. Can I install this XP
upgrade on my computer???

You can reinstall retail Windows XP an unlimited # of times as long as
it is installed on only one computer at a time.

XP Retail can be reinstalled as many times as you like, but only on 1
computer at a time.
XP OEM can only be installed in the computer it's supplied with. If the OEM
version was purchased seperately to a PC, it can only be reinstalled on the
same PC it was first installed on.

If your dad's copy of XP comes in a nice box, then it's a retail copy and
yes, you can install it on your PC as long as it's no longer installed on
your dad's.

Years ago, Borland International (long since absorbed) compared software
licenses to the ownership of a book. Only one person can read it at a time.
Thus, only *one* machine can have a legitimate licensed copy of an
application or an operating system installed on it.

How does the WinXP CD (and/or Microsoft) know that the previous
installation was removed from whatever PC it was in?

The CD knows nothing.
Contrary to popular belief, on this issue Microsoft trusts what you
tell them during the activation process.

[gasp!] Hmmm... I guess Microsoft is more concerned with
pirating in the hundreds and thousands rather than in onesies
and twosies.
