i just installed vista and it says i have 29 days to activate vista if i dont
activate it what will happen? is there a way to uninstall it and go back to
xp?

You need to boot from your XP disc and do a new install. You will wipe your
hard drive clean, starting over. Save any documents before doing so.

ohh so i gotta start all over again?

Yup, so backup any important data. Vista does not do downgrades, neither
does XP or Windows 2000 so its nothing new to Windows

Did you upgrade Windows XP to Windows Vista or did you perform a clean
install of Windows Vista. If the install was an upgrade, the following KB
article may apply.

How to restore a computer to a previous Windows installation after you
install Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933168

If you performed a clean install to install Windows Vista then follow the
steps to "Perform a clean install of Windows XP" in the following KB
article.

How to install or upgrade to Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941

Remember to back up any important data and emails before you restore or
install Windows XP.

You can extend your activation period, aka "grace" period.

Open an elevated command prompt (CMD), type "slmgr -rearm",
hit enter. After a few seconds, a confirmation box will appear.
Reboot, and you will have a fresh 30 days grace. You can do
this *three* times, for a total of 120 days before you must activate.
While in the grace period, you will have access to all updates
and features.

If you don't activate or extend your grace period you will enter
reduced functionality mode.

If you still have a "rearm" left but forget to use it before
the grace period expires, there's a way to fix that, too.

While following his instructions, you'll see he uses "slmgr.vbs -rearm"
to reset the grace period. That command works, too. Either way-
slmgr -rearm or slmgr.vbs -rearm.
