Hi everyone, I am trying to connect to a remote server using the Remote
Desktop Client, that is built into Windows XP. However, if I use the client
that is in WinXP it will not be able to connect to the address at all.
However, if I go onto one of my Windows 2000 machines and use the RDC that I
downloaded from the MS site I am able to connect to this server without any
problems. So there is obviously something different in these two versions.

So I figured, okay install the downloaded one on the XP machine, but when I
try, it says I already have one installed so it won't install the new one.
So my question is, is there any way to uninstall the RDC that comes built
into Windows XP, or is it possible to upgrade the one that is already
installed. Thanks you everyone.

I am working on a domain, and actually I found out that I am able to connect
to the machine if I use the local IP address and connect to the server over
our VPN(server is in China, I'm in California.) However, when I go home and
use my laptop I want to be able to connect to this server and I'm pretty sure
I will not be able to. Once again, there are no fire walls or anything that
would be blocking it, because on the XP machine it works using the local ip
address, and on 2000 machines on the same network it works using the external
ip address but with the newer client installed.

Connecting by IP address should work fine. If you wanted to use the name of
the server instead you might try connecting to: Servername.Domain.xxx instead
of just Servername. For Example the name of the computer might be
Server1.xyz.local. This is a problem that I have run into a few times while
using a VPN and connecting to a remote computer.

With the info you have given, you seem to indicate that there "might" be some
firewall between your home and your office. Since you are able to use the VPN
access to RDC correctly, the local office (California) might have a router /
firewall which is blocking the Internet access to the network. Since your
home is NOT part of the VPN access, then you need to contact the people who
are responsible (??) to configure access the the network. They should then be
able to provide with:

1) Remote "mobile" VPN access to the California part of the network

OR

2) Port forwarding for the RDC protocol (3389)

Actually I copied the XP or 2003 client to both 2000 and 98 systems and it
has never failed so I think there's something else at work here. IP address
should be fine. There are only two files mxtsc.exe and mstscax.dll so you
can simply copy them into your system32 directory and create a shortcut to
the .exe. There is also a .chm file but that's not necessary.
