I'm wanting to know if it is possible to configure Xp home edition to run
off a CD/CD-RW/DVD-RW and for ALL USER DATA to be accessed on the hard drive
?

Does anyone know if this is possible and if so, how do I do it ?

I used to do tech support for IBM and one of my then co-workers, who was
quite knowledgable, said that he was going to do that but he found a new job
before I could find out if it had been accomplished or not.

Anyone got any ideas ? I would have to imagine it would take quite a bit of
editing the registry if it is possible.

You can burn yourself a Bart PE bootable CD (www.bootdisk.com)
to achieve more or less what you want. You will need a WinXP
Professional CD (but no licence number).

NO! This is true for ANY version of Windows.

what is this supposed to mean? Are you saying you can run from a CD/DVD or
are you saying you can't?

standards have fallen and schools are to be blamed for illiteracy!

No. Windows XP will only run once it is installed
properly on an internal hard drive.

For one the space is too small. Second is that it is Read-Only media.

Besides all else, XP performance would be glacial
compared to running XP from a hard drive.

Someone just asked this recently. The short answer is yes, with
BartPE. Check back a week or two in this group. There's other
options. And while you can access files, you can't run programs
except those which don't need to be installed first.

Windows XP..
Yes and No.

Windows PE (and BartPE) are essentially CD/DVD bootable images of Windows XP
with some functionality. They have limited run-times, but many people I
know use them when travelling - so they have a desktop with tools they are
familar with.

www.ubcd4win.com

That page may be something that you want to look into.

As usual, you're full of crap. Windows PE and BartPE do _exactly_ that;
they run XP from CDROM.

You can do this with BartPE, you are limited to what you can install on
BartPE. I have a copy with mozilla, macafee, spybot and all other
goodies that I would need. It can be done.

I never created a BartPE cd until a few weeks ago and I created it with
no problem.

I've got a machine that came with a "recovery CD" that reimages the
machine. It has a \i386 folder on it. Can I use BartPC with this?

The CD is s back-level, not SP2. Will BartPE handle this OK??
