I should like to be able to remove some of the control plus letter functions,
eg Control plus H, gives a hanging paragraph. Is this possible?

CTRL+H is assigned by default to the Replace function.
You can re-assign keyboard shortcuts, but there is rarely a good reason to
do so, and it makes it very difficult to obtain support when your version of
Word operates differently from everyone else's

Thanks for your response. I should have written that Control T gives a
hanging paragraph. I am finding that as I type I must be pressing the control
function without realising I am doing so in Word. As a result I keep getting
hanging paragraphs I do not want as well as Replace window. I would like to
disable such functions. Can I do so?

You could investigate Windows Accessibility Options - Sticky Keys which
would help limit accidental control key presses
Or you could locate all the Ctrl key combinations in tools > customize >
keyboard and remove them (though I suspect some of them will be persistent).
Another possibility is to disable the CTRL key - and you will find many
references on how to do that using your favourite search engine.
Or you could simply be careful where you put your fingers when typing :)
