Is it possible to remove or disable WMP9

I find Media Player Classic does everything I need on my PC, but I cannot
Associate MPC with files as WMP9 always takes over again.

Any advice appreciated

Add/remove programs,windows components,uncheck the box for WMP
Or,in WMP,tools,options,file types tab,edit the boxes....
