Is "deactivation" necessary?

I just purchased a used version of XP Home Edition. The
previous owner had loaded it on his computer but then
found it was not compatible with some favorite programs
and hardware that were resident on his computer. My
question is, when he reverted back to his previous
operating system, was XP automatically deactivated? If
not, how does he go about deactivating it so that I can
use it on my computer?

There is no de-activation process. Simply try to activate online; if it's
been long enough since the original activation, it will go through without a
hitch.

If you can't activate online, just call the number that will appear after
you answer a couple of questions in the activation dialogs. When I've had
to call, activation has been quick and easy.

If you do activate by phone, though, be sure you are at the computer and/or
have a pen and paper.. you'll receive a 40-character string you must enter
properly.

There is no such thing as deactivation. If this is a retail version, for you to use it, all he needed to do was take it off his computer, but ...

.... if it's an OEM version, he cannot do that. The terms of the OEM license permanently ties it to the first computer it's installed on. He can not legally sell it and it can't legally be used on your computer.
