Is anyway I can abbreviate a referenced phrase?

Dear all,

I have defined a bookmark reference containing a couple of words, and use it
in many different place in a document. Sometimes I need it to be a "first
letter abbreviation". For example, if I define the phrase "first letter
abbreviation" a bookmark, and refer it in couple of different place, sometime
displayed as "First Letter Abbreviation" in full (this is easy), sometimes as
the abbreviation "FLA". What I want is, if I modify the original bookmark to
"first character shorting", then the latter referece will be automatically
updated as "FAS".

Is there anyway to enable me to do that? Thank you in advance.

Death to the TLA! What a silly, silly idea. Just step back and think about
it for a moment.

Jezebel,

Don't know why you say that.

It is not a "silly idea", but practially a need in reality.

You don't want to menually change every occurance of the abbreviation of a
phrase in a large document, after you modify the original phrase, do you?

Maybe you are think that can be done fomating the words within the field
(hinds characters except the first letter of each word), and then using the
"\* MERGEFORMAT" switch in the field code? Believe me, that does not work
(though it should) -- after update, the Word only makes all those charecters
visible except spaces!
