I have posted 5 times and not a reply, I have tried google but cannot get a
satisfactory resolve. My pc keeps locking up whenever I try to access My
Computer and nearly everything I run stops responding. System restore is a
crock of S**t as it doesn't restore diddly squat and everyone of my
ad/spy/virus software says that I dont have a problem. I have run sfc
/scannow and restored any necessary files. I have run tuneup utilities and
corrected any invalid active x entries, shortcuts etc etc but still nothing.

Hi

Any error messages either before or when My Computer locks? Is the access
via a double-click or right-click>Properties?

Have you tried here:

Have you tried booting into safe mode? Does it show a post screen? Have you
checked the power supply and all the fans for proper operation? Installed
any new hardware or software lately on it? Have you tried booting from the
XP CD and doing a repair install on it?
What have you done to solve the problem?
Please give us a little more information, ( brand, speed, hardware, etc)

Hi Chaps, I wondered where the calvary was hiding.
I am on os xp home ed
2.1 ghz processor
30gb Hdd
My machine was working fine up until last night and all of a sudden it takes
about 5-10 minutes to boot to desktop, even then not all startup items
startup. Norton doesn't start, ZA doesn't start and I havent touched
anything in msconfig.
all of the icons on startup work except my computer, when my mouse passes
over it the startup menu freezes. If I try to access my computer from
desktop icon the my computer folder opens with no icons in it and if I try
to close it it stops responding. As do other apps. I have run adaware,
Spybot, NAV 2004 full scan with no reported problems. I have run CWSShredder
nothing reported. I ran a system restore to two days ago and the problem
still exists. I ran sfc /scannow and still the problem is there. I am
stumped

no joy Will,
I am not even sure what that is supposed to do but I added it anyway.
I have just tried a repair through the recovery console and when I press R
for repair a message comes up which version of windows would you like to
boot to then it has a flashing cursor and press enter to cancel, as I have
never used this before what should i do there?

Hi

If you trying a 'Repair' install, you are in the wrong place - you've
pressed the wrong 'R'. Have a look at the following article:

"How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install"

nothing is working Will, I have just tried installing the recovery console
from
e:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons but the install screen is blank and not
responding. I can access the internet ok and OE but trying to run anything
seems to be futile, even some features of some of my software wont work. I
am loathe to do a full clean install as I have too much stuff that would
need to be backed up and reinstalling all my software will take days, there
must be a fix. Is there a free online tool that could diagnose the problem?

Hi

I'm not too sure what you are attempting. If you are trying to 'Repair'
install XP, you don't need to go into the Recovery Console. At the first
screen press Enter, then after you have accepted the license press 'R' at
the next option. Don't worry about the Recovery Console - it's hard to
reinstall XP from there.

Will, whta would cause 'MY Computer to hang, what would cause it not to show
anything within the folder, that is really my main problem

OK. turn the computer off......Put the Windows XP cd in the cd tray, start
the computer and boot to the cd-rom,
press enter on the 1st screen( to reinstall windows). follow the next few
screens till you get to the screen where it will ask you if you want to
repain Windows XP or reinstall it, THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS THE FIRST REPAIR
SCREEN !, ( it is about 3 or 4 screens past that one) , choose to do a
repair install and follow the prompt there. That will repair the current set
of windows saving your programs, and settings.
After that, let us know how you are doing.
Personally, I believe all your problems is with NORTON, Iwould SCRAP IT and
not even use NORTON JUNK!!
I have found many many computers in my business that were having problems
directly caused by NORTON ANTI-VIRUS. The rest were mostly caused by
installations of the other trash program (AOL).
Let us know how you make out.

I'll give that a go Rick and will post back later, thanks for taking the
time with this issue
