We are looking for a system to manage work requests and placements

The intention of the system is three-fold:

Firstly, to keep a profile of each client and their service requests
(different types of service, different lenghts of time and different
frequencies)

Secondly, keep a profile of worker details, including their skills,
performance rating and availability (availability would be great if we could
enter it in a calendar layout, with available dates highlighted)

Thirdly, we need to be able to have a computer generated but over-rideable
match to match the service requests with the worker availability, and give us
reports to that effect.

In an ideal world, we would like to be able to pull all sorts of reports
from the data

Is access going to be suitable for us?

Im not very familar with access, however, one of our team has used Oracle
before.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Thanks

Mary

Mary,

Access will work great for manageing your work requests and placements.
Access has tables for storing information about your workers, clients,
service requests, frequencies of service, types of service, skills, skills
possessed by each worker and performance rating of your workers. Access has
queries for organizing the above data into forms for displaying the data on
screen and into reports for hard copy display of the data. Access has a very
rich programming language (VBA) for controlling your database. Access97,
Access2000, AccessXp and Access2003 are the current versions out there being
used. Some good books are:
Using AccessXXX, Roger Jennings, Que Corp.
Beginning AccessXXX, Smith and Sussman, Wrox
Where XXX is the version (Don't know if there are versions for 2003)
Access ships with a sample database named Northwind which you can study to
see how basic things are done in Access. This newsgroup is an excellent
place to post questions you have. There are a lot of resources available to
you. Access is very suitable for you!! You say that you are not very
familiar with Access. You are going to have a steep learning curve to climb
which will take considerable time to reach a point where you can develop the
application you want. I would like to offer to build the application for
you. My fees are very reasonable. I can speed up the time greatly to where
you will have a working application. Coincidently I have a calendar
form/report module that will do exactly what you describe. Keep in mind that
you can get free help along the way from the newsgroup. The tradeoff is the
long length of time that it will take befor you have a working application.
I'm not free but my fees are very reasonable. The trade off is tht you will
have a working application in a short time. Email me at my email address
below if you are interested in me creating the database for you.

Ambulance chasing again. You never learn. These newsgroups are for free peer
to peer support, not a place for you to solicit work.

Mary:
Yes Access will do what you want and there are a number of excellent
developers who will gladly help for free. PC D has a poor reputation for
ethics and quality of work.

Mary, sorry about the inappropriate solicitation post you received in this
thread. the purpose of these unmonitored newsgroups is to offer free
assistance, advice, and suggestions from fellow Access developers, to answer
your question(s) and help you build a better database. Access is a very
powerful program that can do the things you want; however, building the sort
of database you describe will take a considerable investment of time and
effort, much of it focused on learning the principles of data modeling and
how to use the software effectively. if you're willing to make the
investment, your reward will be that 1) everything you learn can be applied
to future projects (and they'll come up, trust me <g>), and 2) you'll be in
a position to revise and enhance your database without necessarily relying
on the services of a outside vendor. for my standard "getting started"
advice to newbies, see http://home.att.net/~california.db/tips.html (tips #1
and #2). and you're always welcome to post to these newsgroups when you have
a specific problem or question - there are numerous skilled, and some
expert, developers here to help you out.

Mary,

Here are some comments made by customers I Helped ---

"Steve demonstrated creativity, efficiency and professionalism of the
highest standard. His database
programming expertise was invaluable to us. Steve was a pleasure to work
with and displayed a
team-oriented approach to work."
Geordie -- Director of Information Services.

"Wow. This is nice. Very nice. This should help us immensely! Thank you
so much for your help."
Kathy -- Educational Manager at a large Medical Center

"I'm having a real hard time simplifying this stuff for myself and I'm
pleading with my boss to take
a loan or whatever we have to do to get you more hours to handle this
properly. I love working with
your guidance. It's almost as if I need you on the phone for every little
thing that pops into my
mind."
John --- IT Manager, Art-Ave

".....From that point, Steve, with my input, laid out the overall design and
the steps towards the
implementation of the final product which I delivered to my client just last
week. Now, my client
wants me to write additional database systems for them, thanks to Steve who
made me a hero!!"
Jim --- Developer

"Steve is an unique find."

And here are some comments made by people from the newsgroups that came to
me and paid me to help them ---

I like it a lot. It does exactly what I want, very good job. Thankyou and I
repeat GOOD JOB

OK, Perfect, well done. See you when I need something more.

Your very helpful email speaks volumes about your level of professionalism.
I will definitely keep your contact information for anyone who needs these
types of services - we very frequently get local businesses
contacting us looking for exactly the type of service you provide.

One word: Wow. I had no clue it could be such an "aesthetically pleasing"
interface. I figured it'd just be a big chart. That's amazing. You've really
helped me cause out a lot, and you've done a tremendous job with this demo.
With this, I can more easily explain how a database could help us out.

Thanks for looking ahead. That is the reason I really feel safe working with
you. couple of the programmers who do work for me, need to be checked to
told to do every step of the way. With you, I just need to tell you what I
need to be done, and you will think ahead of all the problems that might
occur in the process.

Pointless argument. It still not justify you preying on the users of these
newsgroups for monetory rewards.

Thanks everyone, i appreciate your advice. I know it will be difficult to
learn access, but im sure i can do it! especially with the use of these
newsgroups. :) I have someone to do the ERD's for me, so it is just a
question of getting to know the software

Thanks again, im sure you will hear from me in the near future!

Although I agree with Tina (including that it will take time & effort to
develop your database), fortunately Access provides many tools to make
the work easier (wizards, design views, samples, help files) and, with
the can-do tone that I see in your message, I imagine you won't really
find it to be a tremendous task. You'll probably be able to see some
results right away, such as being able to produce basic reports from
your data. Good luck!

Please feel free to quote anything I say here.

That is most likely all fabricated by PC Datasheet himself. He has a long
history of lying in newsgroups including posting under numerous aliases. He
sends unsolicited spam messages advertising his business. Search through
newsgroup postings with Google. You'll find his "customers" that acuse him
of cheating them. You'll find him promoting a CD that he wants to sell for
$125 that is full of code that he has collected from "free" help forums,
such as this.

There are a great many other consulants available that are honest and
ethical. I suggest you seek out one of them.
