Is a vista ultimate upgrade dvd tied to any specific computer?

Or if your old computer dies, or wish to revert it back to xp,
can you use the DVD to upgrade another computer.

I think this should be the case.. yet someone posted here a different
scenario...

Thanks

AFAIK, no Microsoft operating system retail version (emphasize RETAIL
version) is computer specific. It is a different story for OEM versions, in
that OEM versions usually will only work on the computer the computer
manufacturer set it up for.

Regarding using your Vista DVD to install onto a different computer, you may
have difficulty getting it activated after it is installed. If so, try
activating via a telephone call to Microsoft.

Remember the rule: one computer per license. So Vista needs to be deleted
from the computer on which it was first installed BEFORE installing it on a
different computer.

The upgrade DVD retail would be tied to the hardware though if the
qualifying product for the upgrade was an OEM version of Windows on the
machine it is being installed. So, if your computer came with Windows XP
Home (OEM) which is full product, and you purchase Vista Ultimate Upgrade
(retail), then install it on that same machine, it is tied to the OEM copy
of XP Home because Vista upgrade media requires that the hard disk has
installed copy of Windows to qualify for the upgrade.

Not necessarily. You can do a clean install of a retail FULL version of
Vista and have no tie-in to a previous operating system, whether it is XP,
Ubuntu, or any other OS. During the clean install, the entire hard drive can
be erased, re-partitioned, and re-formatted. So no trace of the previous OS
would be present or needed.

Retail Full or Upgrade version Yes
OEM version No

This is a good example of why top-posting often muddies the waters. He asked
two questions: "Is a vista ultimate upgrade dvd tied to any specific
computer?" and "Or if your old computer dies, or wish to revert it back to
xp, can you use the DVD to upgrade another computer." You've made him guess
which question your message is a reply to.

To Kirk: Peter's answer is correct for your second question--"Or if your old
computer dies, or wish to revert it back to xp, can you use the DVD to
upgrade another computer."

So then why did you middle post?

Sorry Ken, I'm honestly not being an ass, but I hate people who correct
people who post top or bottom.

It doesn't matter which style you prefer, however the way you write your
content does.

What's wrong with that? It clearly shows what you are reacting to. Makes
much more sens than reading an answer then finallly getting to the question.

I didn't say anything was wrong with it, but obviously you're one of the
lower life-forms hanging around here.

I'll make it simple. He is an advocate of bottom-posting and ridicules
those who top-post.

He then middle-posted which is in defiance of his own stance on posting.

So basically he was being contradictory.

Also sense is in the mind of the beholder.

I top-post for a reason.

When I'm posting directly to you I'm answering what you asked.

I guess unlike some people around here I can keep conversations straight,
and I despise scrolling to the bottom to read an answer when I already know
what the question was.
