Is a good idea to gain exposure to both Java & .NET?

I'm interested in both Java and .NET. Do you think its a good idea to
seek exposure to both these technologies in the IT industry? Wouldn't
it defeat my being able to gain expertise in a specific technology? How
important is it to be generic viz-a-viz specific?

Would it be of any use at all for me in the long run (for eg. when I'm
a Project Manager) if I get exposure to both the competing technologies
during my initial days in the software services industry?

Seems like companies tend to hire specialists rather than generalists.
Specialists provide the hard to find skills which make them worth
employing.

That being said... .NET and Java have a lot in common. So whatever you
learn in either technology is not throwaway. You should be able to
transition between both platforms relatively easily. Actually Microsoft
even has a .NET version of Java.

Yes I would say that's a good idea. At least it'll give you some
creditability with the developers. Although I've found that most PMs aren't
very technical and only need to know the high level details ; )
