ipconfig

I have a computer that will not release its IP address
using the ipconfig /release command.
WindowsXP OS. Cable modem. Ethernet card.

It keeps a 169 apipa address. My ISP uses another.

Any suggestiions

You cannot release the 169.x address because it is an auto config address XP
uses when it cannot contact a DHCP server. What happens when you try
ipconfig /renew?
Is the cable modem the DHCP server?
