I've spent the last two days trying to recover from a winsock like failure...
Basically I can not connect to the internet on one PC, nor can I renew
(ipconfig /renew) the IP from my DHCP server, I receive a "not a socket
error".

I believe the problem arose after my wife ran ad-aware...

After scouring the internet, newsgroups, and trying everything published
(including winsockxpfix, deleting the winsock and winsock2 keys, the only
thing I can't find any information on is the error I get when I run the
netdiag /test:winsock /v command.
I get a "Failed to get UDP packet size infomration. The requested service
provider could not be loaded or initialized."

Any ideas - ???

Have you tried to repair WINSOCK with LSP-fix ?

Hi Stan - You might want to try the Winsock Fixes - Part of one of my
"malware" posts:

#########IMPORTANT#########
Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs below, download
both a copy of LSPFIX here:

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

AND a copy of Winsockfix for W95, W98, and ME
http://www.tacktech.com/pub/winsockfix/WinsockFix.zip
Directions here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257

or here for Win2k/XP http://files.webattack.com/localdl834/WinsockxpFix.exe
Info here: http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Directions here: http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

The process of removing certain malware may kill your internet connection.
If this should occur, these programs, LSPFIX and WINSOCKFIX, will enable you
to regain your connection.

NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the Run command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs. (You can also
try this if you're on XP SP1. There has also been one, as yet unconfirmed,
report that this also works there.) Also, one MS technician suggested the
following sequence:

netsh int reset all
ipconfig /flushdns

See also: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm for additional XPSP2
info/approaches using the netsh command.

Thanks for the quick responses...
I tried all the winsockxpfix and lspfix based on other threads...

Here's a short list of things I've tried...
1) when I run ipconfig /renew I get "An operation was attempted on something
that is not a socket". If I ipconfig /release - it does and I get a
192.x.x.x IP...
2) I've removed/replaced the NIC
3) Swapped Cat-5 cable
4) tried a different port on my switch
5) ran several versions of winsockxpfix and ran lspfix earlier tonight
6) manualy deleted winsock and winsock2.
7) reloaded XP - did not format and start from scratch - which is looking
like my last
8) read two hundred posts
9) leanred more about winsocks than I ever thought I'd need...

Any other suggestions???

fig /renew I get

Any chance you recently uninstalled a firewall using
Add/Remove Programs instead of the application's
uninstall option?
See the article listed below:

Connectivity Are Disrupted When You Uninstall McAfee
Personal Firewall

Nope... The problem actually occurred after my wife ran ad-aware, removed a
bunch of skyware then rebooted the PC...
