I am having trouble with a LAN connection after upgrading
XP Pro with SP2. When the NIC tries to connect to the
router, it cannot get an automatic IP address. From the
command line, I can release the connection attempt, but
renew fails with the error message "a socket operation
encountered a dead network."

Type this command in the Start | Run box:

netsh winsock reset catalog

Then, disable and re-enable the LAN connection and see if it works.

If it doesn't, go to Device Manager and un-install the network adapter
that the LAN connection uses. Reboot, let XP Pro detect and install
the network adapter, and try using the LAN again.
