I tried to set up a home network and it failed to work. So I went to dos and
typed, ipconfig to see the ip configurations. But when I did this, I got the
error message,
Windows IP congifguration
An internal error occured: The request is not supported.
Please contact Microsoft support services for futher help.
Additional information: Unable to query routing information.

I can't ask microsoft though becuase I can't pay the £35. Is this a problem
with my laptop, or is it just becuase the laptop cannot connect even with a
network card or modem. I can't even set an Ip as I get the same error. I am
using a network card ofr my laptop and a network card in my computer.
All help is appreciated. :)

Thanks for the help, but i have already tried this and it did not work. Is
there anyway I can install a new one?

There is no Uninstall option for TCP/IP in Network Settings........what you
might want to try is to disable (or perhaps even uninstall) any firewall
software that you might be currently running, and then uninstall the network
adapter in Device Manager. When you restart, Windows should detect the "new"
hardware (i.e., uninstalled NIC), redetect it and reset TCP/IP.

Do you have a VPN client installed by chance? I recall reading on some forum
about a failed install of a VPN client leaving a registry entry behind and
causing the same ipconfig error. I'll post it if I can ever find it.

Regards,

Thanks. I have already disabled my firewall and anit-virus. I found something
else, it says that it cannot locate the IP driver or something like that.
Would buying another version of windows XP fix this? Or is it the laptop

"it cannot locate the IP driver or something like that".........could you
find out the exact error message and post it here, as that might provide a
better clue as to the root of the problem. Does this error message occur on
both the laptop and the desktop computer?

Is the ipconfig command not working only on the laptop or does it happen on
the desktop computer also? How are the computers networked (i.e., via
ethernet and crossover cable, via hub or router, wired or wireless)?

I would also recommend posting your problem in the
microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web newsgroup, as you may get assistance
from someone who is more well versed in networking than I (and that wouldn't
take much <g>).

Regards,

I can't actually remember what the error said or how I did it :~ But it only
happens on the laptop. My computer is fine, and has an IP and obviously can
connect to the internet. I am absoloutley sure it's the laptop. Thanks for
the help

I've just remembered how i did it, I rgiht clicked on the connection and went
to protocol, then I tried to install it, and it came up with the error that
the driver wasn't installed.
