Do you have DHCP server to provide IP addresses
automatically to new machines?

Given that you indicate you are running a "workgroup", I
take this to mean you have several computers that talk to
one another but know "server" of any sort.

use IPCONFIG /all and report back the info here:

note: if IPCONFIG /all indicates an IP address of
169.*.*.*, you are getting an APIPA IP address that your
machine is giving itself to initiate you laptops IP
services.

George,
Thanks for the comments. You are right it is a workgroup
and the laptop did have a 169.*.*.* address. It turns out
that there was a problem with a hub I was using. The
laptop could never receive any packets. Very strange but
a cross-over cable to the computer that was providing
DHCP and Internet access fixed it. What I can't figure
out is that my Wi-FI access point is hooked to the same
hub and computers using it worked fine. So strange that
the Wi-Fi access point could communicate with the main
computer without the cross-over cable but the laptop
couldn't. Thanks for you time and thoughts.
