IPC$ wants password

I have a home network with one machine running XP Pro, one Win98SE, and one
Win98. Recently, when I try to connect to shared resources on the XP machine
from the Win98SE machine, I am prompted to enter a password to connect to
\\<XP computername>\IPC$. This happened once a long time ago and if I
remember rightly I got past it merely by restarting the Win98SE machine. Now
it happens all the time and restarting either machine doesn't help. Other
network functions seems to work normally. Can anyone suggest a solution, or
at least a cause? Many thanks.

That's Win98SE's cryptic way of telling you that Win XP Pro denied
access because it didn't recognize the user who requested it.

Create an account on the XP Pro machine with the same user name and
password that you use to log onto the Win98SE machine. If the shared
resources on XP Pro have the default "Everyone" permission, that will
solve the problem.

Thanks, that works. I already had the user set up, but the password on the
Win98SE machine had changed. Resetting the password on the XP machine to
match did the trick.
