i hope someone can help
yesterday my internet connection went down
i know that the connection still works, because its currently plugged into my ancient laptop.as soon as i plug into the laptop ( via usb) xp picks up the ip and away it goes. however when i plug into my desktop, it refuses to renew the ip, this happens both usb and onboard lan. iv deleted all drivers and reinstalled, all firewalls etc turned off, when i try and ping the modem, i get time out errors, my isp ( blueyonder, uk ) support tool tells me it cannot detect a working adapter.
both adapters, usb and nvidia on board show as working in the device manager. iv run adaware/ spybot/ anti virus etc..
ok, a summary
cable modem works fine
network adapters show as working in device mgr
pc cannot ping modem (lan or usb)
ipconfig detects adapters but shows as disconnected

sorry this is so long, thank you in advance just for reading it,lol
any advice would be much appreciated

Try this:

1. Connect the ethernet cable to the laptop and make sure you have Internet
access.

2. Shut down the desktop.

3. On the laptop, execute ipconfig /release. Disconnect the ethernet cable
from the laptop.

4. Unplug the power supply to the cable modem and wait a couple of minutes.

5. Plug in the cable modem power supply and connect the ethernet cable to
the desktop.

6. Start the desktop.

If the desktop still doesn't get an IP, the issue is harware or software on
desktop. If your Internet connection went down because of a power failure
while your desktop was running, you may have corrupt drivers or system files
requiring a reinstall.

thx for that doug, iv tried that several times, to no avail, my laptop does connect to the net, so i know the modem is ok, my problem is that my pc wont recognise the modem, iv just reinstalled windows, on top of the current install, but it still refuses to renew the ip. im thinking that its the mobo at fault in some way, but would it prevent ip renewal in both lan mode and usb? neither work.iv tried everything other than a complete reformat, and thats looking like the next option. how can i detect where the driver corruption is ( if that is the problem )

thanks again

Maybe this is some hardware issue after all.
I am a little bit unclear on one point.
The desktop cannot connect via USB or Ethernet?
Is that right or did I read your post incorrectly?
Have you tried a different Ethernet cable?
What error message do you get when
you run ipconfig /renew from the command
prompt window?

Have you ever checked out the following article
despite all the scans for spywares / viruses?
Is there any third-party firewall that may have gone haywire?

If you've reinstalled Windows and drivers and Device Manager says the NIC is
working, we're running out of likely fixes. Try:

1. Event Viewer errors?

2. Safe Mode plus networking.

3. Can you assign a fixed IP through Local Area Connection Properties?
Does ipconfig confirm it? Can the machine ping itself?
