What is the real difference between an HOSTS and LMHOSTS files

Excerpt from lmhosts.sam and hosts preambles:
lmhosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to computernames
(NetBIOS) names.
hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names.

lmhosts is the static equivalent of WINS and hosts is the one of DNS.
