Hi,
Is it possible to tell where the person is from and which server they are
using by their IP address? What info exactly can we get from their IP
address?
I have lots of spam and I was wondering if I could find out if it is the
same company or people that keep sending me them. I have a spam blocker but
it doesnt stop all that I would like.
Many thanks
Blondie

Yes and no. The Internet regulatory agencies (ICANN)
assigns IP address methods and blocks of IP addresses. When
you get to the level of an ISP, they assign IP addresses
usually using a dynamic method called DHCP. Spammers can
and do operate from over-seas, they can use false/forged
names. Without the cooperation of the ISP, you can't find
the spammers true name and address. In the United States
they can do this when the Internet use is in violation of
law, some countries and ISPs are not as concerned.
Google for "ip address lookup" and you can learn a lot.

Change your email address, and don't use any of the common webmails like
hotmail, yahoo, excite etc. Be very picky about giving it out. It isn't
worth it to track spammers, you're just letting them waste even more of your
time. Try this: http://www.zaep.com/

So it isnt possible to know that if an IP address starts with say..882.....
it comes from a particular part of a certain country? There isnt like a
country code included in an ip address? Or the same for a particular ISP?
Thanks
Blondie

It depends on the ISP, but knowing the ISP can tell you the geographical location. Numbers are assigned to ISP. So if the ISP is AOL you probably can't tell, if it's Mexico City Internet Access Pty Ltd you can take a punt they are in Mexico City.

Check this website: http://www.networldmap.com/

They are trying to build a system to translate IP address into
location. IMHO, they'll never be able to get it 100%.

Think of IP addresses like unlisted phone numbers, dial the
number and you get the party, but the number actually used
by the end user is almost always changing, every time they
log on the Internet, the DHCP server assigns a new IP
address.

The ISP has a log that can be used to say which user was
using what IP at any given date/time. But without a good
reason they won't tell you who the individual user is.

You can find out the domain and send am email complaint to
(e-mail address removed) or (e-mail address removed)
