Try this:

system properties click on Advanced Tab.
Click on Startup and Recovery Button, on the new windows make sure this
check box is unchecked:

When the Computer will shut down it will show an error or BSOD error write
this down and post in your next post, also look in the Event Viewer for any
error message(X) can shed some light on the causer:
To access the Event Viewer do the Following:
Open a run command and type in the input box:

Here you are on the Event Viewer you will see three Folders:

Lex said:Thanks for yr. help. To the best of my limited ability I´ve tried to do
several of the things u mentioned.
Have turned off the automatic restart and funnily enough the computer is no
longer shutting down, so I can´t report on those error msgs. yet. I´ve taken
the opportunity to update my Norton LiveUpdate something that it didn´t allow
me to do previously. I´m now running a full system scan which it has been
shutting down on, hopefully it´ll finish now. By the way is it possible that
the auto restart is the culprit and whether it is or not is it recommended to
leave it off.
I´ve looked at the event viewer and there were a lot of error & warning
msgs. One of the repetive msgs. is for MSInstaller and relates to XP Pro,
which I don´t have. Everytime I install or do a certain type of activity,
this little box will come up twice and if I let it continue will notify it
can´t find the relevant files (which is also the error msg in eventviewer).
I´ve tried to get rid of it but obviously unsuccessfully.
There was also a ACPIEC warning - Stating that the embedded controller (EC)
hardware returned data when none requested. hich may indicate BIOS
incorrectly trying to access EC without synchronizing whose data is being
ignored.
There were a couple of repetitive Service Control Mgr. errors. They were
firstly, MRT rate service failed to start, source system can´t find specified
file and secondly, Infrared monitor service depends on Time Services which
failed to start since it´s disabled or no device is associated.
DCOM warning - Server didn´t register with DCOM within required time.
W32 warning (3 days ago) - The time server has not been able to synchronize
the system time for 49,152 secs. because none of the time providers has been
able to provide a usable time stamp. The system clock is unsynchronized.
