I'm sure this problem could lie in a thousand different
places, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate
it. With Norton Internet Security and Windows XP ICF
both disabled, my computer still cannot be pinged from
the Internet, and everyone who attempts to connect to the
FTP server it hosts receives an error. Thanks

Does your computer have a public IP Address?
How are you connected to the Internet? If by router you need to forward the
FTP and ICMP ports
Is your ISP blocking FTP and ICMP?
What are the errors?

Good idea in not mentioning any EXACT error messages.
Always so helpful.

And are we to assume that this WAS working once upon a time?
If so, would it be too much to ask WHEN it stopped working?

Should we GUESS if this is strictly Ethernet (RJ45 connectors) or USB or Wireless?

Any routers involved?

I would advise uninstalling Norton Internet Security with its own uninstaller and leave the XP ICF unchecked also.

I have seen NIS go haywire before and just disabling it sometimes is not enough.

Hopefully you have kept up with XP critical updates.

If you are using DHCP, what kind of IP address do you get when you run ipconfig /all from the Command Prompt window?

What happens when you run ipconfig /renew?

Sorry, guess I was kind of vague. I have since been able
to get my computer to respond to an Internet ping by
resetting my modem/router. The ports are already
forwarded, and the ISP doesn't block them. The users can
actually connect, but when the FTP client queries for the
file list, it freezes up. At this point, my problem has
become more specialized, and unless anyone here happens
to know about this sort of thing, I'll post to some other
site. Thanks
