Hi guys, I have 2 maxtor (60gb pr master and 200gb pr slave) that worked perfectly until I reinstalled Winxp, just to see that the 200gb hdd has become invisibile in My Computer but can be seen as hardware with all its stats and is operative. But there's no way to access it.
Is there a way to set that? Any help would be appreciated. Thanx

Can XP 'see' the drive in "Computer Managment" ... ?

Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc and then click OK ...

In the console tree (on the left), click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears. Your disks and volumes appear in a graphical view and list view. To customize how you view your disks and volumes in the upper and lower panes of the window, point to Top or Bottom on the View menu, and then click the view that you want to use.

Disk Management How to use Disk Management

Hope that helps ... :)

In Disk management the hdd is "active" (italian xp version) but still no way to explore it or to access its menu to change or assign a letter. In all activities the only submenu open is "cancel partition". any other tip? thanx

I think that the problem is about assigning a letter. I'll try to reinstall winxp unless you advise me to do something else. thanx a lot anyway

What have you got on the 'secondary' IDE?

There is no, and never has been, any OS on the 200?

I would disconnect the ribbon cable from the 200 ... re-start the PC, shut down and re-attach the cable and restart.

Failing that ... it is quite acceptable to use the secondary IDE, see if that works.

Why XP did not "see" the slave 200 I don't know ... never had that 'problem' before.

Mucks

primary ms -> hdd 60
primary slave -> hdd 200 that never hosted any OS and worked perfectly until I reinstalled Winxp
Sec ms and slave set for two optical units. I tried to disconnect and reattach the ide cable but no way to settle that. I think it depends on Winxp so I think I'm going to reinstall it again.
Thanx for the help

I tried to activate the Recovery Console and I could see the hdd but couldn't activate FIXMBR command cuz I don't want it to format my hdd. I couldn't neither create a new partition there. Any help? thanx

well I got FIXMBR and then CHKDSK /R activated but no news when on XP. MAxtor utility on Ultimate bcd showed that the hdd200 has no type (NTFS).
so what's the deal now? thanx

FixMBR should only be used on your primary drive, in your case the 60gig ... as there is nothing wrong with that drive you should not have used it.

Fixboot D: (if D is the 200) may have worked, but you can only use it from the Recovery Console, and even I give that little bugger a miss and just re-install.

Take out your 60gig drive ... replace it with the 200gig, set it's 'jumper' to master, and use your Windows CD to format it to NTFS ... you will of course loose everything on that drive.

All I can suggest at the moment. :(

thank u for your time and help but I can't afford losing my hard-earned stuff this way (150 gigs). I installed Ontrack's Easy Recovery and I could get some files from hdd200 even if some small pics were corrupted and audio files mixedup in one file.
Now I'll try with FIXBOOT F and tell you.
Thanx
