An inverter, in the strict sense of the word, is a device
that accepts direct current at the input (e.g. from a car
battery) and produces AC at the output.

Some laptops have an inbuilt switch-mode power supply
that can accept input voltages from 100 VAC to 250VAC.
Because its design is similar to an inverter, some call
it an inverter. Other people call it a power pack.

If your Compaq fails to show any sign of life then its
power pack may be defective. If it's an internal power
pack then the machine needs to be repaired by a
Compaq agent. If it's an external power pack then you
have to buy a new power pack.

In laptop parlance an "inverter" provides power to the backlight. (i.e.. is
part of the display)

Here's an example.

Not an expensive part.

If it's out of warranty and you're handy (sometimes soldering involved with
inverter replacement) you can do it yourself on the cheap.

I did a *quick* search on ebay and did not find a high degree of
availability for your model. A more detailed search by part number may prove
more fruitful.

Google "LCD inverter" and you'll find lot's of places that repair, replace
display invertors. As with all things Caveat emptor...

If your not so handy take or send it in for repair.
