Inventory of SW & Hardware

I'm being asked to do a full inventory of about 45 PCs & Servers including
hardware & software. We don't have a WAN nor do we have directory services,
really (Of course, no AD or SMS) The 20-25 PCs in the field never connect
back to our network.

Is there a tool that I can send to folks in the field that they can run
(like a script or something) that will list the inventory on their machines?
I'm nervous about loading anything onto the servers... but is there a tool
you'd trust (THey're NT4 & Win2K).
