I need to re-install WindowsXP. Have formatted the c disk partition with
Partion Magic into FAT32.

When I now boot up with the CD Rom in the drive I get:

Invalid System Disk
Replace the disk and then press OK.

Why is that? This is an original WINXP upgrade disk from MS.

I tried with a Full version of WINME and get the same error.

Need help at this time since I seem to be stuck in this loop.

Have you set the BIOS to make the CD drive the first boot device?
Your pc is trying to boot from the formatted hard drive partition.

Hello
I have run into problems of this kind when using 3rd party formatting and
partitioning tools with XP,
used the tools that come with the XP disk and everything went fine, the only
problem is XP will not format in Fat32, NTFS is the only option, if you must
have FAT32 they the fdisk and format from the 98 & ME bootdisk

If the computer is actually attempting to boot from the CD, you'd see a
message that says ...press any key to boot from CD at which point you'd have
a short period of time to hit a key or it would move on to the next device
in the list.

Check again to make sure the bios is set to boot from the CD first. It's
pretty easy to back out of the bios without making the changes stick.

If all else fails you can go download the 6-floppy boot disks, but you're
really better off getting it to boot from the CD. There's no reason why your
computer shouldn't be able to do that.

Hi Haus,

XP will format to FAT 32. It has a partition limit of 32 Gig's in FAT. It
takes 3rd a party disk to format a larger partition to FAT.

I know, I know.

I have checked again and the CD is at the top in the BIOS.

What are the 6 floppies?

THAT was not helpful at all.

I just responded to questions, I said I know that CDROM hast to be the first
in the boot sequence and that WindowsXP can format in FAT32.

What is it that YOU did not liker?

Computers have a will of their own, it seems.

I have installed windows xp a dozen or more times on my own computers or on
my children's.

Seldom hgad this problem.

BUT - after trying probably 10 times before and doing NOTHING at all
different, no cable, no BIOS, no different CD, nothing, all of a sudden it
does install.

I am still in the process but all seems normal.

Try this
see up all the boot options to boot from the cd
then you are sure you don't boot to the disk.

Hemlock

If that works then you can load xp or what ever.
Please clean the cd with a soft lintfree rag first.
