that computer cannot get on the internet when giving me
an answer.
HELP!!!

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

and:

SpyBot-S&D
http://security.kolla.de/

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

More: This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

this did not work. i am also getting an error message on
startup that says "ERROR STARTING PROGRAM" " A
required .DLL file, MSASN1.DLL, was not found". How do I
find it, and fix it?

There is a recent security patch which involves that module.
Try going to Windows Update Catalog and download the patch.
(It would be better to get it from Windows Update but provided
your two machines can share files the Catalog should make it
accessible.)

my new computer is being taken over by viruses.

Turn on your firewall.

(From Alt-H,S and click on [Protect your PC: 3 steps to ensure your PC is protected])

i found the download, but it says it is for windows xp.

More importantly for Windows NTx, not for Windows 9x.

....
the old computer that can't get on is widows 98.

(Thanks for clarifying.)

Ok. So it is probably sufficient then to restore it from your CD.

Apparently from Win98_63.cab

Supposedly you can use your sfc command to do that.
