invalid ms dos function

when i try to copy adobe pdf files from a cd, i get an error message
that says "could not copy file, invalid ms dos function" some of the
files do copy from the cd but others do not. The only thing I could
think of might be the formatting of the filenames. The ones that don't
copy are formatted as follows: CA98-044 Ref. #2.pdf

any ideas??
 
that was what I was kind of thinking as well, which is not good because
this is apparantly the only copy of the files the guy had who i was
copying the files for
