I decided I needed to reformat my Toshiba laptop (which came with XP Pro OEM
version), but instead of using the Toshiba Recovery Disks, I foolishly used
my retail XP Pro CD (from my desktop machine). It was not until I got to the
part of having to enter in my OEM CD Key that I realised I'd done something
horribly wrong. I then went to try and use the Toshiba Recovery Disks, but
obviously it was too late for that as they no longer work.

I just contacted Toshiba to see if I could get a replacement CD, but they
don't send out OEM disks (naturally) to consumers.

Can anyone advise me what to do now?

Your Toshiba recovery disks should work, unless you have physically
damaged them in some way.

What happens when you boot the machine with the Toshiba Recovery Disk
in the drive? Do you get any sort of error message?

No, the disks are not damaged. When I try to boot to the Recovery CD, I just
get a message saying, "WRONG MACHINE!!!" in huge letters, and then a DOS
prompt >_

I believe it's because I had already reformatted and partially installed XP
with the Retail version that it detects that it's no longer the OEM version.

Jacquie;
Some OEM computers give that message if there has been a hardware
change.
A BIOS update has also been known to cause that error.

A previous installation of anything will not cause that error.

If all hardware is original, clean the CD and drive.
Otherwise contact the manufacturer.

The "MS boys" (only you know exactly who is meant by this) are not the only
ones that do not like the illegal activity you seem to condone.
Why do you feel it is not necessary to abide by an agreement you agreed?

I also have a Toshiba laptop. Get ahold of a Bootable CD with a format
progarm and wipe it the laptop clean. If the Restore disk is readable it
will run. Check the restore disk on another machine to make sure you can
read from it.
