I'm no expert but I had a similar problem after using
music sharing software which had backweb bundled into
it. I think it is some sort of advertising spyware.
Anyway, try this.
start>run>(type)msconfig - this will open up the system
configuration utility. Click on the startup tab. You'll
probably see the offending Backweb application in there.
Click on its check box so that it is deselected and
hopefully when you start up again you'll be rid of it.
Some Compaq and HP computers used BackWeb clients as a way of establishing
contact for support. This is mostly an issue if the machine was upgraded to
XP from Windows ME or 98. Generally, you don't need this software. You
can use start,run,msconfig to identify the app that's loading the backweb
client. Once you know that, you can go to add/remove programs and remove
it.
